Full Name: Artful Shelter
My role: Design & Fabrication
Largest two-cone tent in Austin, Tx
Shot of the Cordillera Blanca Grande set up in downtown Austin for Earthday
This is a custom in design to seasonally cover a kidney shaped patio for a BnB in Hot Springs, NC. The client wanted rain protection without sacrificing the vista around the patio.
The organic shape covers the oddly shaped patio while allowing views of the mountains surrounding the area.
the seams are lap stitched and then tape sealed to make them waterproof at the seams. The double zipper panels are waterproof and allow the tent to zip around the hoist cone which is then lifted up the pole with a pulley system.
This tent has been out to the Blackrock desert for several years, it’s withstood brutal dust storms, caustic alkali clay in every crevice and baking sun.
The colurful blob in the front is my personal tent “experiment” it has a hammock suspended inside and is made of salvaged fabrics.
This was a setup of the smallest single-cone tent during the Bonnaroo music festival, it was used for a “digital meditation” installation.
Setup in the beautiful Kyukendall falls area of North Carolina for a wedding
The five-cone tent has a suspended center pole.
I worked with Artful Shelter for about 6 years, during that time I designed over fifteen canopies and had a hand in every aspect of their creation. From client meetings and concept to sewing and welding the fabric, sourcing materials, creating custom hardware and rigging, deployment and transportation. I relish using the fabric to create sweeping, non-linear shapes.
